Objectives of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in the Primary Stage
The objectives of teaching English in the primary stage are intended to familiarize the pupils with the language (orally and in writing) in a stress–free and fun–loaded atmosphere to prepare them for more demanding tasks in the subsequent stages.
Below is the general statement of the performance objectives of teaching English as a foreign language in grades one, two, three, four, five and six in the primary stage in terms of language skills for convenience.
The aims in the early grades are:
Ø To assure that learning English is easy while developing a child's enthusiasm for, and the desire to learn a new language.
Ø To develop positive learning habits such as turn taking, organizational skills and cooperative learning.
Ø To enlarge children 's horizons so that they become familiar with different cultures while developing an understanding of their own.
Ø To experience language awareness in terms of how English works and differs from Arabic.
Ø To enable children to communicate simply but effectively through the development of oral proficiency in English.
Ø To lay solid foundations for the development of literacy skills in English.
