| As is my wont, I often read the TFD article of the day, and find myself following links which are offered in each article. Today's offering of "Charles Peace" was no exception. I found myself fascinated (nay, embarrmindingly titillated) by the amount of information available on the web about judicial hanging. Nevertheless two little pieces of information about the English Language left me pleased that I had persisted. I do like language trivia.
I always thought that a gallows was the same as a gibbet. Close by my home is a crossroads that my local history buffs have described as the place of a gibbet. In my ignorance, I mindumed that this was a place where folk, particularly highwayman on a notorious stretch of road nearby, were hanged for their misdemeanours. But no, apparently one was hanged on a gallows and, if an example was needed to persuade the local populace to be good, one's dead body was transported to the gibbet from the gallows; and there one was left to hang in chains until one's body fell apart. The actions of hanging and gibbeting were mentioned as two separate processes in judgements of the court, apparently
The other little item concerned "Gala days". Again, having been to a number of galas, including swimming galas, I thought it was just a reference to a celebratory fair or other occasion of public amusement. I think I was of the (unfounded and unresearched) opinion that it was probably a French or Latin word that had crept into our language. According to one of the links from the TFD article, it in fact is derived from the anglo-saxon word for a gallows and the celebrations were those surrounding public executions, where all sorts of amusements were provided while the crowd awaited the spectacle. One lives and one learns. Thank you TFD for pminding an informative, if somewhat gruesome half-hour.

yeah, the hanging is punishment and public spectacle, but the gibbet is serious psychological control - when you come to a crossroads in your life, remember what happens when you chose the wrong path!:

The gala - that I did not know - makes those gala days sound a bit less festive, now!
but heck, it is all entertainment!![ندعوك للتسجيل في المنتدى أو التعريف بنفسك لمعاينة هذه الصورة]
